Cruise drinks packages, briefly

A cruise drinks package is a fixed daily fee that covers most drinks on board instead of paying per drink. Most major lines sell one, priced per person per day for the whole cruise — and many, P&O included, make every adult in the cabin buy the same tier, which doubles the real cost for a couple.

Whether it pays off comes down to one number: what you'd actually spend at the bar each day. On P&O, whose prices we've verified, a pint runs about £6.25 and a classic cocktail £8.50–9.95, while the Classic package costs £45–55 per person per day depending on cruise length and when you buy. At £55/day that's roughly seven £8.50 cocktails a day to break even — as a worked example, not a rule. Your actual break-even depends on what you drink, and on how much you drink on sea days versus port days.

The calculator does that maths against your own drink mix, compares every package tier at once, and accounts for things most calculators skip: all four package prices instead of one, every adult in the cabin, service charges on lines that add them, and drinking less on excursion days.

Cruise drinks package FAQ

Are cruise drinks packages worth it?

Only if your daily bar spend would beat the package's per-day price. On P&O, breaking even on Classic takes roughly 7 classic cocktails or 9 pints per person per day at the on-board price. Most lighter drinkers pay less as they go — run your numbers in the calculator above.

How much does a cruise drinks package cost?

It varies by line, cruise length and when you buy. P&O's verified 2026 range runs from £16 pp/day (Refresh, soft drinks) to £65 pp/day (Deluxe bought on board), with pre-book discounts. Other lines' prices will be added as we verify them.

How many drinks a day make a package worth it?

Divide the package's per-day price by what you'd pay per drink. P&O's Classic at £55/day against £8.50 cocktails means about 7 a day to break even — fewer if you pre-book at £49/day. The calculator does this against your real drink mix, not one drink type.

Are drinks packages per person?

Yes — priced per person, per day of the cruise. Many lines, P&O included, also require every adult sharing the cabin to buy the same package, so budget for the whole cabin, not one drinker.

Can you share a drinks package?

Drinks packages are generally personal and can't be shared — typically served one drink at a time. Rules vary by cruise line, so check the terms for your cruise. On P&O Cruises, all adults sharing a cabin must purchase the same package.

Do drinks packages include bottled water?

Depends on the line and tier. Some tiers only cover draught soft drinks — P&O's Refresh, for instance. Check what each tier includes on the line's package page before assuming water, canned drinks or speciality coffee are covered.

Can you buy a drinks package after booking?

Usually yes, up to a cut-off close to sailing, and often cheaper in advance — P&O gives 10% off pre-booked up to 3 days before departure, then sells on board during the first two days at full price. Cut-offs differ by line.

Do drinks packages cover embarkation day?

Packages are priced per day across the whole cruise, so day one is part of what you pay. Exactly when service starts on boarding day varies by line and ship — we note line-specific rules on each line's page as we verify them.
